Galle is located on the south west of Sri Lanka, just before the famous Unawatuna beach. Galle was founded in 16th century by the Portuguese and the arrival of the British enabled the town to reach the height of its development in 18th century. Galle is surrounded by fortifications built by the Dutch and is a perfect example of the interaction between European architectures, brought by the colons, and the South Asian traditions. Two hours walk to stroll in the town will make you discover one of the UNESCO World Heritage....
The best way to explore Galle is to start from the main gate and then reach the forfications to enjoy scenic views and turn around the town. Afterwards, enter the city to get lost in its streets and discover colonial houses.
Starting on Church Street, you will walk in front of the luxury Amangalla Hotel and first stop will be at the white Dutch Reformed church.

Have then a look to the cut Galle Library and the old Post Office Fort.
Very few steps later on the right is the Anglicane All Saints' Church.
Turn then on Queens Street to pass by the Maritim Archeological Musuem that will end to the Court Square.
Lots of people, tuk-tuk and scooters use to gather on the Court Square around an amazing tree.
Before going on with your walk, make a little detour to Galle Black Fort through the Police Station. You will enjoy from there a nice view on a beach.
Back to the Hospital Street stands the High Court of Galle and then of course the Old Dutch Hospital.
The Old Dutch Hospital is one of the oldest building of the town. It is now transformed into a gallery of restaurants and shops but renovations were made to keep the historical architecture, certainly a way to help for preservation ? The other facade of the building, where stand all the restaurant, has a very pleasant view on the sea.
The 26 meters lighthouse built inside Galle Fort is one of the emblem of the city. Erected 6 meters above the road level of the remparts, it offers great views on the ocean, the colonial houses and the Meera mosque, which actually looks like more a church !
Fortaleza restaurant is a lovely restaurant with an inner garden. Cuisine is mainly international but the atmosphere of this colonial place is really pleasent, especially for a diner.
Fort Bazaar is definitly the best post to enjoy an elegant colonial atmosphere. Price is a bit high, around 175 € in July.
Staying in Unawatuna is also a good option, not too far, 15 minutes tuk tuk with more affordable prices and less noise than the city.
