Nuwara Eliya and its colorful central market

Once you have visited a tea factory, climbed on water falls, and reach the hightest peak of Sri Lanka, which is actually in Nuwara Eliya, you might spend a little hour in the city center to explore a hidden secret, the lively and colorful Nuwara Eliya Central market on Bazaar Street.

Nuwara Eliya is quite a small colonial town and there are very few points of interest to be honest. The region is amazing but you have to go outside of the city to explore tea plantations, nature, mountains and waterfalls. However, we always have spare time to spend and this when we walk around the city.

First of all, have a quick look to the post office. The architecture is a heritage of the colonial history of the country. The interior has been redesigned but the exterior of the building has been restored and maintained. There are also some charming guest houses like this where you can spend the night. We decided to stay at Luxe Wilderness as it reflected so much the british atmosphere (next review).

Once you have explored the architecture of the city center, apart from the bus station and the main road which is a succession of modern stores, you can spend some time in the botanical garden. We avoided this visit as the garden closes at 5pm and is quite costly for what it is. And this is how we ended to the central market, as we thought it could be quite an experience !

In the middle of the main road, turn on your right to enter New Bazaar Street and dive into a colorful world. The market, which is not too big, is mainly interesting for food : fish (and smoked dry fish!), meats, fruits and vegetables.

Bon appétit !
