Southern Sri Lanka is well known for its beaches where you can chill, party, dive or surf. South of Sri Lanka has also other points of interests, such as Matara Temple on a small island and Dondra Lighthouse, which is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Let's explore it...

Matara is not famous for its beaches but has a small temple on a island that deserves a 10 minutes stop on the way. The temple is not under renovation but it is nice a see a small one on the sea that is not too touristic such as the ones in the cultural triangle. Few roupies as a donation will help them to finalize the renovations and you will meet locals and monks instead of hundreds of tourists.
Dondra Light House :
End your day at the Dondra Lighthouse, which is the southernmost point in Sri Lanka and also the tallest in South East Asia. The lighthouse is surrounded by palmtrees, rocks and beautiful beaches. From Devinuwara beach, a small and and hidden treasure beach with fishing boats, you will enjoy a very nice view on the lighthouse.
We combined this itinerary in one afternoon, along with Unuwatuna, Dalawela, Mirissa and Weligama. However, we had only 45 minutes to spend on these beautiful beaches. My advise, take the whole day to enjoy bathing times and drinks !
